ARMA Boston May Event: An Afternoon at the Archives
Join us for an afternoon at the Archives!
Boston City Clerk Maureen Feeney has invited us to visit the Boston Archival Center on Thursday, May 16th. The Center, which is located at 201 Rivermoor Street in West Roxbury, houses the City’s official archives, the Boston Public Library’s satellite storage facility, the Boston Redevelopment Authority archives, and the City’s Archaeology Lab.
GETTING THERE & LUNCH
We will meet for lunch from 11:30 to 1:15 at a local Lebanese restaurant, Al Wadi (1249 Veterans of Foreign Wars Pkwy West Roxbury, MA 02132.) It is recommended that we park in the Center’s parking area - there should be at least 25 spaces inside the gate as well as handicap parking. If needed, we can park on Rivermoor Street near the gate. Public Transportation is the 36 bus (Rivermoor Industrial Park branch) out of Forest Hills. The nearest commuter rail station is West Roxbury, about a mile’s walk. We can then walk an easy 5 – 8 minutes to the restaurant.
THE ARCHIVAL CENTER TOUR
We will arrive at the Center around 1:30. City Clerk Maureen Feeney will welcome us in the reading room. Managers from each institution will then offer an overview of their respective operations:
· John McColgan and Marta Crilly on the archives and records program and the treasures that the City Archives holds
· Dean Huggins, CRM, on the Boston Redevelopment records and archives program
· Mary Frances O’Brien on the Boston Public Library and its vast holdings at the Archival Center
· Joe Bagley on the City’s archaeology program and the exciting discoveries on display in the Archaeology Lab.
