The
following has been extracted from a January 15, 1995
memo written by Susan Chapdelaine to the Richard L. Haas
Scholarship Committee:
About Rick
Haas:
For those who never had the opportunity to know Rick
Haas, this will tell you a little about who he was, and
his contributions to the information management
profession. The words "Information management" are used
because Rick had the foresight and the vision to
recognize that records management and archives are part
of the larger field of information management. He also
realized that with the increased focus on technology and
electronic documents the lines that have traditionally
distinguished the two professions have become
increasingly blurred. Both professions today work to
position themselves within the information area.
Rick
gave his heart and soul to both ARMA and NEA. He
constantly stressed through his words and by his actions
the similarities and common goals of both professions.
Throughout his career, Rick worked to improve the
communication between NEA and ARMA.
As the
son of two school teachers, Rick also knew the value of
education and the need for professional organizations to
provide opportunities to advance education in their
field. While he was President of the Boston Chapter of
ARMA he laid the groundwork for the establishment of a
scholarship fund, encouraging the Board of Directors to
invest some of the money the chapter was holding.
One of
the things most admired in Rick was his persistence and
perseverance. Rick never stopped fighting for what he
believed in, no matter how many obstacles he
encountered. Rick saw great potential in both ARMA and
NEA and spent much time and energy in forging alliances
among the organizations to strengthen their position
within the information management arena.
