"Document Recovery"
Luncheon Presentation at the Seaport Hotel

Presented by: James Gilbert "Munters"/Lori Foley "NEDCC",

Sponsored by: ARMS

Overview:  dPlan:  The Online Disaster-Planning Tool

Most records managers recognize the need for disaster planning. But disaster planning is often put on the back burner as employees juggle day-to-day tasks. Nearly five years after 9/11, most records repositories still do not have an effective, up-to-date disaster plan. (The records manager who is given the task of writing the disaster plan faces an array of information – some good, some bad – in books and on the Internet. Often the finished document is not as comprehensive as desired, and practicing the plan is overlooked.) Ms. Foley will provide the tools, advice, and encouragement needed to complete and practice a disaster plan.

The Northeast Document Conservation Center (NEDCC) and the Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners (MBLC) have partnered to develop dPlan, a free, computerized disaster-planning tool. dPlan uses an online, fill-in-the-blank template that guides users through the creation of a disaster plan specific to their institution. The resulting plan contains disaster procedure checklists, salvage priorities, current contact information for key personnel, insurance and IT contacts, as well as suppliers of pertinent emergency services. Using dPlan is a way to make the follow-through of this vital planning activity manageable, even for smaller institutions with limited staff.

Munters will also be discussing options and procedures in how to restore your records after a fire or flood.  We will be discussing the types of drying services available in the industry today and some of the ways to help insure that your records are restored properly after a being damaged.
